If you want to experience a truly Authentic Korean Soft Tofu Stew, you must visit this legendary spot in Jeonju that I’ve been attending since 5th grade. I still remember the first time I stepped into this restaurant in the 5th grade, drawn in by the sharp, spicy aroma that tickled my nose. The little girl who once held a spoon with tiny, sprout-like hands has now grown up to be a mother of two. Though 30 years have passed, today I sat back down in the very same spot where I sat as a child, this time holding my own children’s hands.
This place is so famous that practically everyone in my town knows it, and it’s still bursting with vibrant energy. Seeing the restaurant packed with people enjoying their meals gave me a strange sense of relief and joy—I’m so grateful this place has stayed exactly where it is.
In the past, there were very few restaurants in this area, and the original owner—a woman—only sold tofu. However, people passing by often asked for something more than just tofu, saying they wanted a full meal with rice and Authentic Korean Soft Tofu stew. Confident in her tofu, she began serving soft tofu stew. During this process, drawing from her hometown of Namwon in Jeollabuk-do, she added generous portions of pork to the stew, which quickly gained a very positive response from customers. This is one of the most authentic local sundubu jjigae restaurants in Korea.

A Traditional Spot Turned Smart: Where Past Meets Present
As time has passed, the scenery of the restaurant has changed its clothes. Instead of the friendly waitresses coming over to take our orders like in the old days, smart ordering kiosks now sit on every table. Once the order is placed, a cute serving robot glides over to deliver our food. I couldn’t help but think, “What a wonderful world we live in now!” While I felt the shift in generations, I smiled thinking that this modern convenience might be what helps this traditional spot last even longer.

The Signature Move: ‘The Irresistible Fresh Kimchi’
If you ask the regulars why they keep coming back, the number one reason is undoubtedly the kimchi. Unlike the typical well-aged kimchi, they serve Geotjeori—freshly made kimchi tossed in red pepper seasoning right before serving. It is incredibly crisp and flavorful. It’s truly magical; you’ll find yourself finishing a whole bowl of white rice with just this kimchi before the main dish even arrives. I completely understand why people travel from afar just for a bite of it.
Best of all, all side dishes are available for free refills. However, here’s a small local tip: when the price of napa cabbage skyrockets, you might want to read the owner’s mood (Nunchi) just a little before asking for that third plate of kimchi!

Authentic Korean Soft Tofu Stew: 30 Years of Mastery
The secret to this Authentic Korean Soft Tofu Stew lies in the harmony between the ‘house-made tofu’ prepared every morning and the ‘generous portions of pork.’
- House-made Tofu: It has a level of nuttiness and pillowy softness that is incomparable to the tofu you buy at the store.
- Deep Spiciness: At the first bite, you’ll instinctively say, “Wow, this is spicy!” But it’s not just a harsh, stinging heat. The rich pork broth anchors the spice, creating a deep savoriness that keeps you coming back for more. It’s the kind of flavor that makes it impossible to stop your spoon, even while you’re breaking a sweat.

Gentle Flavors for the Little Ones
Since my kids aren’t quite ready for spicy food yet, I ordered the Tofu Cutlet and the White (Non-spicy) Soft Tofu. The cutlet, made with tofu instead of meat, is very light and savory—a perfect healthy meal for children. Seeing them munch away and say, “Mom, this is so delicious!” made my heart feel so full and happy.

Closing Thoughts… Sharing the flavors and memories of my childhood with my own children feels both mysterious and deeply moving. I suppose you could call it a “heritage of taste” passed down through generations.
For now, I chose the mild menu for them, but I can’t wait to pass down the secret of this “deliciously spicy” flavor soon. I look forward to our next visit when we can sit side-by-side and take on the “spicy stew challenge” together. It was a truly happy family outing.
[Local Tip: How to Order and Eat like a Pro]
Visiting a local favorite for 30 years means there are some “unwritten rules” that only the regulars know. To make your visit perfect, here is a quick guide for your experience:
1. Ordering & Customizing Your Meal
- Recommended Menu: Original Soft Tofu Stew (Ilban Sundubu-jjigae). This is the signature dish that has kept regulars coming back for three decades, offering the most authentic and deep flavor of the house-made tofu.
- Customizing the Spiciness: You can easily select the “Non-spicy” option on the ordering kiosk.
- Pro Tip for “Medium-spicy”: If you prefer a perfect balance, tell the staff directly after ordering that you want it “Medium-spicy”.
- Quick Note: On very busy days, they might occasionally bring the standard spicy version by mistake. Don’t worry—just politely ask the staff to change it, and they will be happy to assist you.
2. How to Eat: Separate vs. Mixed?
There are two main ways to enjoy your Authentic Korean Soft Tofu stew, but your choice can change the entire flavor profile:
- Separate (Ttaro-gukbap style): Keeping the rice and Authentic Korean Soft Tofu stew in their own separate bowls.
- Mixed: Putting the rice directly into the boiling stew.
- Our Recommendation: If it’s your first time, I highly recommend the “Separate” method. Mixing the rice can sometimes make the spice feel even more intense, and you might find it too hot to finish!
3. Planning Your Visit
- Waiting Time:
Weekdays: Usually no waiting time, allowing for a peaceful meal without any delay.
Weekends: Expect a short wait of about 10–20 minutes during peak hours. - Family-Friendly: Yes! This is a great place for families. While the Authentic Korean Soft Tofu stew is known for its deep spiciness, you can request a non-spicy version for children, making it a comfortable dining spot for everyone.
- Price: Around ₩50,000 for 3–4 people, and about ₩30,000 for 2 people.
[Hours of Operation]
- Daily: 09:00 – 19:50
- Note: Open all year round unless a separate notice is provided.
[Local Tip: Getting There & Back]
Since this restaurant is located on the outskirts of Jeonju, transportation can be a bit inconvenient.
Getting There:
The easiest way is to take a taxi from Jeonju Station.
The one-way fare is approximately ₩15,000.
Getting Back:
It can be difficult to find a taxi nearby for your return trip.
I highly recommend using the Kakao T app to call a taxi easily.
