Today (February 17, 2026) is Seollal, the Lunar New Year and one of the most significant traditional holidays in Korea. Along with Chuseok, it marks the true beginning of the year on the lunar calendar. Rooted in ancient agricultural history, this tradition has been passed down through generations, serving as a precious anchor for our lives today.
Tteokguk: A Pure Beginning in a Single Bowl
On Seollal morning, the whole family gathers for a steaming bowl of Tteokguk (rice cake soup). The white, clean rice cakes symbolize starting the year with a pure heart. I vividly remember being fascinated as a child by the elders saying, “You only truly turn a year older once you finish a bowl of Tteokguk.” I smile thinking of my younger self, eagerly finishing two bowls just to grow up faster.
Sebae and Sebaetdon: The Grace of Giving
After the meal, we perform Sebae, a traditional deep bow to our elders. Following the bow, there is always a warm Dukdam (words of blessing) and a generous envelope of Sebaetdon (New Year’s money).
Looking back, Seollal was a “dream day” in my childhood. Now that I am on the giving end, that pure thrill has faded a bit, which feels a little bittersweet. However, watching my child today, I realized that the joy of Seollal has simply evolved into a different form.
What are the Most Popular Seollal Gifts for Kids in 2026?
If you are wondering what Korean children do with their Sebaetdon, here is a look at the most popular gifts this year. Adding a gift to the pocket money is a growing trend for modern Korean families.

A Happy Seollal with Teeniepings and My Child
Today, I found that lost excitement again through my child. I watched their eyes sparkle with intensity as they navigated the toy aisle, clutching their Sebaetdon tightly. After much deliberation, the choices of the day were none other than Happying and Gentleping from the Catch! Teenieping series!
Watching my child walk out of the store, cradling those new treasures so preciously, I saw a glimpse of my younger self. Seeing them experience the same joy I once felt gives me a wonderful sense of “surrogate satisfaction” that warms my heart.
Dreaming of a Hopeful Year for All
The toy corner was crowded with children, their faces glowing with anticipation as they chose their “dreams” with their precious pocket money. Drawing from this burst of positive energy, I am making a resolution to live 2026 with all my heart.
I hope that all of our lives this year will blossom as brightly as the smile of a child holding their favorite Teenieping. Wishing you all a wonderful year ahead. Fighting! ^^
